HISTORY

Sutherland was founded in 1946 by Jack Sutherland, who originally imported master coils of steel from Europe after WW-II. In the mid 1950’s Sutherland began travels to the Pacific Rim, which resulted in importing master 72” coils of steel from NKK, Nippon Kokan Steel of Japan. The coils where shipped to the Port of Los Angeles and slit to size and re-rolled to Sutherland’s customers needs.

During the many years of travel to Japan, Sutherland had the opportunity to view many of Japan’s major manufacturing and stamping plants. As a result, in 1960 Sutherland was one of the first companies to import 50 sets of Japanese Stamping Presses manufactured by Aida Engineering.
In the early 80’s, it became apparent that the competitive advantage of Japanese product had eroded due to currency fluctuations. In the mid 80’s, Sutherland imported one of the first lines of Taiwanese manufactured presses from Seyi. Sutherland provided specific design direction and oversight to Seyi in order to produce presses that would meet the critical quality standards required for the North American market.

In the late 90’s, Sutherland established a partnership with Sanes Presses of Taiwan. The focus on improving machine quality and reliability continued with no expense being spared. Innovative press frame & drive designs are world class coupled with the highest grade of component that is readily available for after sales service.
